Adults, teens, children, and babies ride in automobiles almost every day here in the United States. As a parent, you want to keep your children safe from minor injuries, major injuries, or even death that can be caused by an automobile accident. How can you keep your young children and teens safe on the road? Check out the following safety tips!
Young Children:
-Birth-12 months: For this age group, have children ride in rear-facing car seats in the back seat of the car.
-1-3 years: Have this age group ride in rear-facing car seats until they outgrow them. Once they outgrow them, they should ride in forward-facing car seats with a harness.
-4-7 years: Have this age group ride in the forward-facing car seats with a harness until they outgrow them. Then, have them ride in booster seats in the back seat of the car.
-8-12 years: Have this age group ride in booster seats until they outgrow them. Then, have them ride in the backseat with a seatbelt securely fastened.
Teens:
-Before you drive away, make sure to buckle your seatbelt.
-As a teen driver, don’t drive with young children or small teens in the passenger seat.
-Don’t try to fit more people than there are seatbelts in your car.
-Make sure your car is in good shape (check your tires, gas, brakes, etc.).
-Be aware of medicine that might make you drowsy.
-Don’t drive like you own the road, drive like you own the car.
-Obey traffic laws. They are there for your safety.
-Look both ways before you drive through an intersection, even if the light is green.
-Use turning signals, and turn them off when you’re done.
-Try to stay away from things in the car that will distract you (cell phones, texting, music, makeup, etc.).
-Most importantly, stay courteous, safe, and alert at all times!
