Though it is not something most of us think about, many kids
in the Lake County area are going hungry, many of
which qualify for the free and reduced lunch programs in school. The schools
are trying to do their part to keep students from going hungry through these
programs, but what happens to these kids on weekends?
There are some in our community who have recognized this
issue and are giving their time, effort, and resources to meet this need. A
group of volunteers have assembled in partnership with the Deliver the
Difference/Kids Against Hunger organization ran by Bob Bostic. Their goal is to
meet every Thursday to assemble food packages for the kids to make sure they
have something to eat during the weekend. Each backpack contains 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches,
2 dinners, snacks, juice boxes, and shelf stable milk. As a bonus 2 Kids
Against Hunger meals, along with “add ins” to create variety, will be provided
for the children’s family in a separate brown bag.
You can help this group of volunteers by providing food or
monetary donations. Here is a list of items needed for the Kids Pack backpack
