Fall is Officially Here on Saturday!

Fall 2.jpg

Saturday is September 22nd, which also means that it’s the first day of autumn! Though fall doesn’t necessarily mean cool weather here in the State of Florida, it does remind us that the summer heat will soon become milder, that some great holidays are around the corner, and that pumpkin will be your new favorite cooking ingredient. Check out these fun fall facts!

  • The pumpkin is a member of the gourd family, which is native to the Western Hemisphere. There is evidence to support that the natives of Mexico were eating gourds as early as 5500 BC. When the Colonists arrived in North America, the Native Americans were growing pumpkins. It was after learning about these pumpkins did the Pumpkin Pie tradition begin during the fall.
  • October 2010 had five Mondays, five Fridays and five Saturdays, which only happens every 823 years.
  • October 31st is always Halloween.
  • Bobbing for apples is of Roman origin.
  • Thanksgiving is always on the fourth Thursday in November.
  • Believe it or not it’s already snowing in some places, but on a lighter note ski season has begun.
  • Because of its wide verity of trees, the Eastern United States, especially the North Eastern U.S., is one of the best places in the world for viewing fall colors
  • The leaf colors red, yellow & brown are in the leaves all year long and only become exposed when the green chlorophyll disappears in the fall.
  • Mulching fall leaves where they fall lets them decompose so that they can release their minerals back to the underlying soil.
  • Last and most certainly not least, football season is up and running.
