This Sunday is National Grandparents Day! Because of the hard work of Marian McQuade, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation that made the first Sunday after Labor Day “National Grandparents Day” in 1969. Ever since, our country has been celebrating and showing our appreciation for our grandparents on this special day throughout the years.
In our families, grandparents have many important roles. Oftentimes they pick up their grandchildren from school and watch them over the weekends, teaching life lessons and instilling family values in ways only grandparents can. In the United States we have over 70 million grandparents, and according to AARP, 4.5 million children are being raised in households headed by grandparents. It’s because of these important roles that grandparents often take on and the love that they show us that make them beyond worthy of a national holiday.
Make sure to show your love and appreciation for your grandparents this Sunday, September 9th! Spend time with them at home or take them out for a nice meal. For younger grandchildren, have them make a special craft or card to show their love for their grandparents. Check out grandparents.com to find different kid’s craft ideas and coloring pages that your kids can make. No matter what you choose to do, make your grandparents the center of your day.
From Westgate-Jones to all grandparents, we hope you have a wonderful day!
