So far in our safety series, we have covered many topics that deal with how vehicles can drive safely and how they should be aware of what is going on around them. However, when it comes to the road, it takes more than just caution from the drivers. It takes vigilance from pedestrians as well. Pedestrians can be at a disadvantage when it comes to crossing streets along with cars, trucks, SUVs, semis, and vehicles with wide loads. Especially at night, drivers find it difficult to see pedestrians. The following are some applicable tips for pedestrians to keep you as safe as possible.
- Use designated walking areas whenever possible.
- Make sure to pay attention to walking signals and to keep a safe distance when standing on street corners.
- Be sure to be seen, and be aware of blind spots when walking near a vehicle. It is best to assume the driver does not see you.
- When you think you can go, proceed with caution.
- Make sure to stand out. Wearing bright or reflective clothing is especially helpful when walking at night.
- Watch out for wide loads. With such large vehicles, there is a good chance that the driver might not see you.
